62nd Wagon Train
The only bi-state rolling historical event starts its 62nd year when the wagons circle up at Zephyr Cove, Nev., for registration and a kickoff dinner June 4. It’s the Highway 50 Association’s Wagon Train. And the destination is Old Hangtown or bust. It takes a week for the wagons to get here as they roll along at 10 mph, with stops to rest the horses and a traditional layover in Strawberry Meadow for the draft horses and outriders’ horses. The wagons roll into Strawberry on a Monday and the next day, after breakfast in the lodge, is open to the public as the Kit Carson Mountain Men put on tomahawk throwing and black powder demonstrations. A band entertains in the evening, along with a barbecue. By Friday the wagons arrive at High Hill Ranch in Camino for another barbecue and band, plus cowboy poetry. Saturday is the big parade down Placerville’s Main Street, but starting on Broadway with crafters, food and entertainment, with the final desination the County Fair Shopping Center on Placerville Dirve. It’s another, you guessed it, Barbecue and live band. Throw in some mechanical bull riding and you’ve got yourself a grand finale.
